The Office of Institututional Diversity has coordinated several celebrations on Health Science Campus. The programs gave tribute Dr. King by bringing together a rich community of cultures, neighborhoods and perspectives. The January 2008 speaker was Mark Chastang, vice president and executive director of the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Benefit Dinner                                                                                                                                                                         The Martin Luther King Jr. Benefit Dinner is a fund raising event that awards scholarships to qualified African American students at The University of Toledo, allowing their dreams to become a reality. The annual scholarship dinner is coordinated by the Office of Institutional Diversity, where the keynote speaker was James E. Graves, Jr., Justice for the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Mediation Services
Mediation is a non-adversarial method of resolving conflict that involves disputing parties, sitting down together with a skilled impartial individual, called a mediator, who helps them work out a voluntary solution to the problem that is acceptable to everyone involved.

A mediator is not a judge; he/she does not decide who is right or wrong. The disputants, themselves, are free to decide whether a voluntary settlement to their conflict is possible and, if so, what the terms of the agreement will be.

Types of disputes that may be handled by mediation are:

  • Workplace disputes - including harassment, discrimination, terminations, and Americans with Disabilities Act related issues.
  • Other disputes determined by the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) Assistant to the President to be appropriate for resolution through mediation

    When is mediation determined?

When a claim is filed in the Office of Institutional Diversity (OID), the Assistant to the President will determine if mediation is the best course of action. If so, and all parties involved in the dispute agree to mediation, a convenient time and location for a first mediation session will be arranged by the Assistant to the President of OID.

At mediation, a skilled impartial mediator listens carefully to all parties and assists them in working out a resolution to their dispute that is agreeable to everyone involved.

If an agreement is reached, the mediator will write out the details of the settlement and provide all parties with a copy.

The OID will follow up with all parties after mediation to make sure their voluntary settlement is working out to everyone's satisfaction.

What are the advantages to conducting mediation?

    - Resolves disputes privately

    - Resolves disputes quickly, before they escalate and result in the need to use more expensive, time consuming and stressful conflict resolution methods

    - Preserve valuable personal or professional relationships that could be damaged by using adversarial conflict resolution methods

    - Potential for more creative and satisfying results

  • - Learn effective communication and negotiation techniques
