    ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:

    The Department of Public Health & Homeland Security in the College of Medicine at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus offers a Certificate in Occupational Health (COH) program in Industrial Hygiene. The flexible evening and weekend 15 semester credit curriculum consists of lecture, laboratory, and field experiences designed to increase students' knowledge, comprehension and skills of Industrial Hygiene. The Certificate program is for students that desire to augment their existing education and training via academic courses.

    The comprehensive and flexible curriculum provides a basic foundation of information for students with limited or no background in these areas, while simultaneously offering students with professional experience the opportunity to expand their scope of knowledge and skills.

    The program offers classes during evenings and weekends to accommodate both part-time and full-time students. Evening courses meet just once per week for 15 week semesters, and weekend courses meet on alternating weeks for eight Saturdays per semester.

    The curriculum will benefit those with applicable education and experience that intend to take the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) examination.

    CERTIFICATE OPTIONS:

    The curriculum incorporates the general areas of science, technology, management and communication within the context of the courses. The curriculum allows enough flexibility to assure that students may select courses that best meet their professional needs.

    The 15 semester credit (scr.) curriculum for the COH program consists of the following:

    Core Course (3 scr. required)
    OCCH 502 - Occupational Health Science, Regulations and Management (3 scr.)

    Specialty Courses (9 scr. required)
    OCCH 540 - Air Contaminant Modeling, Ventilation and Respiratory Protection (3 scr.)
    OCCH 562 - Physical Agents - Effects, Evaluation and Control (3 scr.)
    OCCH 531 - Chemical Agent Toxicity, Evaluation and Control (3 scr.)

    Elective Courses (3 scr. required)
    OCCH 506 - Occupational Safety Science, Regulations and Management (3 scr.)
    OCCH 516 - Environmental Health Science, Regulations and Management (3 scr.)
    OCCH 526 - Hazardous Materials and Emergency Response (3 scr.)
    OCCH 600 - Public Health Statistics (3 scr.)
    OCCH 601 - Public Health Epidemiology (3 scr.)


    NOTE: A Master of Science in Occupational Health degree also is available. This program requires completion of 40 scr. of course work including a scholarly project or thesis.

    ADMISSION CRITERIA:

    Criteria for admission are listed below. Applicants not meeting all of these criteria (e.g. GPA <3.0; deficient foundation courses) may be eligible for conditional admission. Students can be admitted for Fall, Spring and Summer terms. Application materials are due on or before August 1 (Fall), December 1 (Spring) and April 15 (Summer).

    Degree:
    Earned baccalaureate from an accredited college or university.

    Foundation Courses:
    Minimum of 21 semester credits in communications, humanities, and social sciences and 32 semester credits in undergraduate or graduate-level science, mathematics, and/or technical courses including college-level math, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology (or equivalent). Applicants having a deficiency in foundation courses may be eligible for conditional admission.

    GPA:
    Minimum 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) for regular admission or 2.5 for conditional admission.

    Other Requirements:
    Recommendation from at least two references. International applicants are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and must score a minimum of 550.

    To apply to the Certificate in Occupational Health Industrial Hygiene Program simply follow the steps below.

    STEP 1  Print one copy of the Admission Application.
    STEP 2  Print two copies of the Letter of Recommendation.
    STEP 3  Read the instructions for applying, then fill out forms accordingly and mail.
