Baccalaureate Nursing Program Information

UT College of Nursing offers the junior and senior years of a baccalaureate nursing program, a master's degree, and post-master's certificates in certain specialty areas. Students who seek the baccalaureate in nursing (BSN) may do so in two ways:

High school graduates (including individuals with a GED and prior college work) may enroll at The University of Toledo (UT) or Bowling Green State University (BGSU), take classes for the first two years and complete the curriculum at UT's Health Science Campus. These students usually have the advantage of enjoying a full college experience by living on or off-campus and participating in all collegiate activities. Transfer credit is evaluated at UT or BGSU.
A registered nurse with an associate degree or hospital diploma nursing program has a license to practice nursing. This RN contacts the UT Admissions Representative or the Nursing Academic Advisor at UT or BGSU to establish transfer credit and to plan a curriculum. After the student completes prerequisites and courses required by the university, she/he immediately begins the nursing sequence at UT's Health Science Campus.

Students who seek the master's degree in nursing and already have a baccalaureate degree and a current license to practice nursing can obtain information about the majors by contacting the Graduate Program Nursing Advisor at 419-383-5841 or the program secretary at 419-383-5820. Students should apply online and mail required items for the application directly to the UT College of Graduate Studies.

The MSN program offers two areas of preparation for advanced practice nursing: clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner. Students choose between four majors: Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP)/Clinical Specialist; Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP); Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP); and Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. Students selecting the nurse practitioner majors are prepared for national certification examinations. A graduate certificate for Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist is available for nurses who have previously earned the MSN degree.

Both Master's and Baccalaureate programs are nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for the maximum 10-year period (through 2009).

UT also offers CNL (Clinical Nurse Leader- Graduate Entry) for a person with a bachelor's degree who is not a nurse but who wants to be a Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator MSN for RNs with baccalaureate degrees and clinical nursing experience who want to become nursing faculty or staff educators.
