D) NIH DIRECTOR'S BRIDGE AWARDS
As indicated in previous announcements regarding the financial operating policy for FY 2007 (see <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-030.html> and <http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/financial/index.htm>) the NIH is taking specific steps to buttress investigators whose R01 applications receive review scores near the Institute or Center nominal payline and who have limited additional support. This approach was reinforced with the enactment of PL 110-005: Revised Continuing Appropriations Resolution, 2007 on February 15, 2007. The full text of this Notice is available at <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-056.html>.
C) SINK DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS MAY BE ILLEGAL
The Seattle Times reports that "A respected University of Washington pharmacology professor became a felon Wednesday when he acknowledged dumping a flammable substance down a laboratory sink and then trying to conceal his actions." According to the article, the faculty member "pleaded guilty in federal court to violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by flushing about four liters of the solvent ethyl ether. He faces a maximum five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when sentenced June 18, although prosecutors have recommended probation under the terms of a plea agreement." <http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003607035_uwprof08m0.html>
B) OBLIGATION OF INVESTIGATORS TO PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION
NIH has issued a notice reminding recipients of NIH funded research "...of their responsibility to protect sensitive and confidential data as part of proper stewardship of federally funded research, and take reasonable and appropriate action to prevent the inadvertent disclosure, release or loss of sensitive personal information." <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-07-054.html>
E) WHEN GRANTS.GOV IS SLOW (Source: NIAID Funding News)
Regular Grants.Gov/NIH procedures ensure that you are not penalized for Grants.gov processing delays. To be on time, your application must have a time stamp by 5:00 p.m. local time on the due date.
Grants.gov immediately gives your application a time stamp and tracking number after your authorized organizational representative submits it. Any processing after that does not affect the submission time.
It's not just NIH applicants, but also those from other agencies who can bog down Grants.gov's resources. Apply early to avoid crunch times. There may be overlapping submission dates you don't know about.
Once you're in, it can take up to 48 hours for your submission get through validations, and Grants.gov's Contact Center wants you to wait that much time before requesting help.
The new issue of the NIH Record, the NIH staff newsletter, features an article (page 8) on NIH Director Elias Zerhouni's priorities as he approaches the fifth anniversary of his appointment. The article appears as a side-bar to a longer article (starting on page 1) on how NIH is implementing the recently enacted NIH reauthorization legislation. <http://www.nih.gov/nihrecord/03_09_2007/03092007_Record.pdf>
3) GRANTSMANSHIP
The previous static listings for browsing published NIH Guide announcements have been replaced with real-time database query listings that retrieve only active Requests for Applications ( RFAs ) and Program Announcements ( PAs ), based on the expiration dates stated in those announcements. The new listing for NIH Guide Notices displays Notices published over the last two years, by default, since expiration dates are not currently assigned to these announcements. Links to these new resources are available from the main NIH Guide Funding Opportunities and Notices page, at:
<http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html >
All announcements (active plus inactive) in each category may also be viewed by using selections in the drop-down box at the top of each listing page. Clicking on header links allows re-sorting of lists. In addition, a new Ad Hoc NIH Guide Database Search page <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/search_guide.htm > is available, which allows for individualized queries with various selection criteria.
If you have any difficulty obtaining the information you need from the Guide, contact Carol Reichenbach at extension 4252 or via e-mail <carol.reichenbach@utoledo.edu>.
